“ShanzhaiPad” P-P-P68 Demoed At IFA Berlin
Last month the Shenzhen Great Loong Brother Industrial Co. Ltd released a 10″ tablet which had a striking resembles to an outdated CrunchPad Protoype. Back then one Chinese site that covers knockoffs called it ShanzhaiPad since the Chinese word “shanzhai” typically means “knockoffs”. Now at IFA Berlin, this same device in black is flexing its muscles.
The unit runs on Windows XP and an Intel Atom N270 1.6GHz CPU and 1GB RAM. It has 160GB internal storage, VGA out, 3 USB slots, and a microphone and headphone jack. The battery lasts 1.5 hours, and we hope the official meant that’s the time for web browsing and not standby. It also comes with a built in stylus. The official said it will cost $250 USD for500 units, and we’ll make a guesstimate that a single unit will go for $280-300 USD.
The CrunchPad on the other hand will also run on the same CPU and RAM, but will have a 12″ screen and be made of aluminum instead of plastic. It will only include a measly 4 GB flash drive and it is rumored to be sold at $400. Most notably however is that CrunchPad Inc. is working alongside FusionGarage, which it acquired last July, to develop an OS-less browser which allows the unit to boot straight to the web browser. Google is also developing it’s own version named Google Chrome OS and it has partnered with Acer, Asus, Sony, and Toshiba to bring such units to market.
